What better way to make an exciting announcement than with an exciting video to match! Here is a compilation from our shoot in Ox Bel Ha last week.
I would like to take the opportunity to tell you all about an exciting next step in my career. I have recently applied for and received a position as in house camera AC/diver with Silverback Films in Bristol. The team have an impressive background in producing Natural History TV series over the years. Some of their credentials include Blue Planet, Planet Earth and Frozen Planet to name but a few, and more recently 'The hunt' on Netflix voiced by Sir David Attenborough with another series 'Our Planet' in pursuit this April. Over the next years I will be learning from and working alongside some of the most prolific 'Blue-Chip' Natural history camera operators in the world. This will of course mean leaving Mexico and going to live in Bristol by April and so sadly I will be saying good bye to the caves for now and would like to extend a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me thus far and to those who provided the 'glowing references' which helped me attain the position and a significant move forward with my career.

'it's scale is humbling, and light beams ethereal'
Three years ago I filmed a documentary about artist Philip Gray @philip.gray.3979 painting underwater in the cenotes here in Mexico. The Pit was one of the sites Philip captured on canvas and it was an absolute pleasure to take him back there guided by @maurocaveworld so he could show his lovely girlfriend Guny Patel who does so much behind the scenes for his art. Yesterday five of us went to shoot in Ox Bel Ha with DPV and of course lots of light. After the first time I dove there on my qualifying dive for DPV cave with Mauro Bordignon @maurocaveworld , I couldn't wait to eventually go and film it. It's so different from the other caves in the area ... dark winding passages, suddenly pierced with laser light beams, opening up into massive cenotes, closing back into dark cave that swallow tens of thousands of lumens of video light for breakfast. Giant eyes of tarpon lurking make you jump and then giggle, momentarily reverting back to your child like self bringing forth those little niggles about cave monsters you push to the back of your mind and dismiss .

I hope everyone had a wonderful new year surrounded by friends and loved ones like mine was ☺️ 2019 holds a lot of opportunities and exciting adventures. This little guy is a crested tit, a common dweller in coniferous forests. I learnt a lot of things during spending time with the Sami in the Arctic circle last month. What struck me the most was their harmonious/respectful relationship with nature and passion to protect it. I don’t think it is a coincidence that so much of the worlds natural biodiversity thrives around indigenous people and I think we could all learn a lesson in terms of only taking what we need and living in a more sustainable way 📸 @rebeccajanefraser #wildsweden #crestedtit #forest #happynewyear2019 #nature_up_close
Earlier this month I was very lucky to catch up with Manolo Mendieta @spunco. With the help of @felix872 and @michaelsilvanetto we trekked deep into the jungle to a cenote @xibalbaschmittner kindly showed me a while ago. In search of some crazy light beams and a cenote to ourselves for Manolo to shoot in, it was the perfect place! Here is some footage from when I got to have a play with Manolo's RED Digital Cinema Scarlet - W which has a 5k Dragon sensor. Even through the LCD screen I could see that this camera is phenomenal. It was great to get the hang of the functions and zoom/focus gear and some nice shots of Manolo who like myself is usually comfortably sat on the other side of the lens. Thank you @scott_carnahan for the introductions! I feel the start of a beautiful friendship coming on :) It's always nice to meet someone in the film industry who is encouraging and open in terms of their knowledge and skillset. Manolo has shot some really impressive natural history documentaries over the years for BBC, Nat Geo Wild and Red Bull to name a few, with more coming next year. What an amazing trip, thank you to everyone who made our Christmas so special! @wildsweden you excelled all expectations and so happy to have left the arctic with people we consider friends. @sapminature and @silbasiida it was wonderful to meet you thank you for sharing the Sami culture with us we thoroughly enjoyed your company and hospitality and very grateful for your time and all the stories. Christmas day this year was spent cross country skiing 9km over remote frozen rivers followed by delicious food and FINALLY some Aurora 🤩 We couldn't have asked for a better day. This shot was taken while Mum and Lennart were loading water from a hole they drilled into the ice on the river onto the snow mobile.

“God Jul” which is Merry Christmas in Swedish. Much more fitting (and much easier to light paint) this year. Here is where we are sleeping tonight at #sapminature a beautiful Sami camping ground 10m from a large frozen river where we are going adventuring tomorrow on skis. We have it all to ourselves over the next few days. Everything is candle light here so this is the last of my battery and wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas before signing off for a few days which will be really nice. Tonight we hiked some kilometres up through the forest overlooking the town we are staying in to see if we could see some northern lights. It was cloudy and full moon both of which were not in our favour but where there is a will there is a way and we had so many giggles light painting and got some really cool results! This is the first time I have seen the sun since we have arrived. We spent the morning in full Snow White mode with Grey-headed Chickadees feeding out of our hands! In the afternoon we made it up to the Sarek National Park where it was high enough to see the sun. We had an encounter with a moose and watched reindeer crossing the frozen lake. Up bright and early to try and get a glimpse of some wild moose. All the animals here are wild, even if the Reindeer are essentially farmed they roam free in herds over 100s of km so to get close is such a privilege. It’s -28C today! Being the daughter of archaeologists and the sister of a zoologist always makes for interesting dinner conversations but it also means we can go on adventures together away from tourists and hang out with local people and experience some really unforgettable things. Had a lovely first day starting the morning filming reindeer and listening to stories about the Sami community and some of the amazing accomplishments and achievements by Anna Kuhmunen @silbasiida who is a local Sami Reindeer herder/book writer/herding dog extraordinaire. This afternoon we traveled by husky sled which was a phenomenal experience to a toasty camp fire where I regained feeling in my toes! Stina and Matti are inspirational with the love and care for their dogs with a wicked sense of humour you need to brave highs of -14! Tomorrow we will go out into the wilds and look for Moose and Reindeer deeper in the national park #wildsweden #husky #huskysledding #nature #workinghuskykennel #silbasiida
